Walkable Arlington is a student-led grassroots organization founded in January 2021, whose mission is to make Arlington, Texas a more walkable city.
Walkability basically means how safe and accessible an area is for non-vehicular pedestrians. Whether you are walking, biking, skating, using public transit, or moving from point A to point B without the use of a motor vehicle, increased walkability means more safety and accessibility for you.
Walkability is crucial for multiple reasons. The most obvious is environmental- every person that walks, bikes, or take public transit cuts down greenhouse gas emissions, thus making the community significantly greener. Walkability also has economic, social, and health benefits by encouraging people to walk to their local library, grocery store, or mom and pop shop rather than drive alone in their car for x amount of time.
There are many ways to support us. The simplest way is to follow us on social media for updates regarding our group and our future plans. You can also contact us about supporting us financially, joining us as a member, or joining us for an audit.
An audit means we as an organization take a look at popular streets for pedestrians to take and look into their safety and accessibility. As an example, we would split into three groups and have one travel down South Cooper Street, one down West Park Row Drive, and one down Collins Street. We collect information on what works and what doesn't work and eventually present the information to city council.
Sign-up sheets for walk audits (in which we walk) and bike audits (in which we bike) will be emailed to Walkable Arlington members several days before the event, and those who would like to join may do so. If you are not a member of Walkable Arlington and would still like to participate, please contact us and we will email you the sign-up sheet so that you may join us.
Everything we do- audits, walkability, grassroots organizing, and more- is done to ensure a greener and safer city for all. We support Vision Zero, a road project that supports zero traffic-related deaths, as well as walkability, green spaces, and community building. If all of these are supported, we can have a greener and safer community for all.
